Acoustic Comfort was founded in 2003 specifically to address an issue that had evolved out of a desire for greater efficiency and lower costs within corporations - the open plan office. Whilst this made communication easier and allowed teamwork to flourish, it brought with it issues of privacy and concentration. This was particularly true in contemporary spaces where hard, reflective surfaces and other poorly absorbing materials were creating an acoustic environment more akin to a swimming pool than an office.
It was obvious these acoustic issues needed to be managed, providing relief from noise distractions for workers who found it affected not only concentration and privacy but led to a general frustration in their working lives. When questioned, 72% of workers1 were voicing dissatisfaction with their speech privacy and 70% said they could be more productive in a less noisy environment2.
